Half of telesales staff 'pretending' to work

Nearly half of employees admit to spending a third of their day creating the impression they are working in order to conceal inactivity, research claims.

The study from HireScores.com is based on a sample of 3,000 workers and shows nearly a third of employees, including telesales staff, waste three and a quarter hours a day on non-work related tasks.

Almost half of those surveyed would not work on new tasks if they emerged 20 minutes before they were due to go home.

Managing director of HireScores.com Lisette Howlett claims to have found the results "a complete surprise".

"The number of people 'pretending' to work is very concerning but those employees who complete their daily tasks and still manage to enjoy their time at work are sure to be the happiest," she states.

In research by the Trades Union Congress, workers in fields such as telesales who feel their employers used their talents properly are more "satisfied" with their jobs.
