Chancellor 'should do more to aid recruitment'
Chancellor Alistair Darling's pre-Budget report could have done more to encourage UK employers to take on staff, it has been claimed.
Michael Baxter, economist at independent financial data collection and research company Defaqto, said Mr Darling should have altered tax rates and reduced national insurance payments rather than increasing them.
"That would encourage employers to take on more staff and improve the incentive to work," he continued.
Mr Baxter went on to say that trying to "play around with improving people's incentive to work rather than spend" would have had a more positive effect on the economy over the long term.
In delivering his pre-Budget report yesterday (November 24th), Mr Darling told parliament gross domestic product growth for 2009 is forecast to be between -0.75 per cent and -1.25 per cent.
He added that inflation is forecast to come down sharply, reaching 0.5 per cent by the end of next year.
