Govt 'must make sure women are treated fairly in downturn'
The government should introduce measures to ensure women do not lose out during the credit crunch, an organisation asserts.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), is calling for policies including universal access to world-class childcare and actions to close the pay gap, applicants for sales vacancies may be interested to discover.
He claims that women are feeling the pressures of the financial crisis more than in the downturns of the 1980s and 1990s.
Recommending the government redoubles its plans to improve fair treatment for women, he says there has never been a greater need for this, which could affect females in sales jobs.
Mr Barber states: "I urge ministers not to shelve their plans to introduce stronger maternity and equality rights [and] not to give in to the all-too-predictable lobbying by business."
The TUC has also warned the authorities that a U-turn on its flexible working plans could foster inequality.
